Dr. Sam Schikowitz's Biography

Sam Schikowitz began his experience with natural medicine as a child. His parents regularly used their families' traditional cures and ethnic folk-wisdom, including whole food nutrition, herbs, guided imagery, aromatherapy, massage and acupressure, hydrotherapy, and home-birth in their home on Prince Edward Island, Canada. In school, Sam had an interest and aptitude for natural sciences, and was mentored by Dr. Edwards, a passionate science and gym teacher. Upon graduation from high school, he traveled, eventually landing in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada, where he worked on a variety of Organic farms and gardens which also employed these and other healing techniques. There he was influenced by his experiences with a local herbalist, midwife, and activist, Eloise Charet. Feeling that the professions of medical doctor, chiropractor, herbalist, nurse, and osteopathic doctor did not encompass his experience of health and healing, the epiphany came when he discovered a naturopathic physician in British Columbia. It was then that he realized that the naturopathic profession embodied the common sense practicality, open-minded inquiry, and hard science that Sam felt was necessary to bring forth a good family doctor. Sam then set about getting his pre-med bachelors degree from UC Santa Cruz and was accepted at Bastyr University.

While at Bastyr University, Sam’s experience with acupuncture and Oriental medicine changed him from a skeptic, to a student of Oriental medicine. He also benefited from the excellent Ayurvedic instructors. He chose clinical supervisors that combined these approaches with excellent naturopathic and conventional medical care to come to a thorough understanding of their patients’ condition.

Upon completion of the programs, Sam moved to the Mid-Hudson region to be near his extended family and provide family and general care.

Dr. Sam—
I am writing to tell you how grateful I am for your help.  When we met in June 2008 I was completely depleted.  I had been through a year and a half of crazy work stress, endless tests,  procedures and inseminations without success, a thirty pound weight gain and a very painful bout with Achilles tendonitis.  Needless to say—just talking without crying was a feat.  Your prescription began with plenty of rest and creating some boundaries—but continued with suggestions for almost every area of concern.  I wanted to tell you about some of the triumphs that have resulted from them.
First of all—I had cross-fiber friction therapy on my Achilles tendons as you advised.  I have to say that I was sure that the pain I was suffering was never going to subside.  Today, I have NO pain 99% of the time.  Occasionally I have a twinge here and there, but I would confidently say that I was cured!!  I am so thrilled with the results I tell everyone who will listen!!
Second—Exercise.  I know everyone says that regular exercise will help with stress, weight, sleep and a myriad of other problems, but it is not always easy to take that first step.  Your gentle guidance got me to the gym—it started slowly, but I gained confidence and started moving more and more.  Since October 1, I have lost 12+ pounds and I feel so strong and clear-minded.  My sleep has definitely improved and so has my energy level, mood and general disposition.
Third—The book you recommended  "Non-Violent Communication" has been a definite eye-opener.  Although it is a struggle some days for my inner voice to  be "non-violent"—the concept has really touched me and allows me to be more conscious of how I think and speak to myself and others.
Mostly—your knowledge, kindness, patience and courage in the face of a storm (really—it was a crazy thunder-storm and then all the lights went out—we finished our session in the dark!)were just what I needed.  I am so appreciative of the time you spent with me as well as your diligent follow-ups.  The suggestions you made—both the ones I followed and the ones that fell by the wayside were insightful and totally on the mark.  Thank you so much for your help!!

Best—
Amie Baker
